At the end of this informative tour you will be provided with an opportunity to visit the Hermitage. This museum is famous far beyond Russia, and its collection of masterpieces of art is recognized as one of the largest world-wide. While in St. Petersburg, you could not but visit the State Hermitage Museum.

Hermitage Museum

The museum replenished its first collection of exhibits thanks to the Empress Catherine II. These were collections of paintings by Flemish and Dutch schools purchased in Berlin. Today, the Hermitage has over 3 million exhibits, including not only paintings but also archaeological finds from different eras, works of art of Western artists, and much more. You should draw special attention to the architecture of the Winter Palace and its magnificent interiors with impressive decoration executed by the best artists of that time.

The Hermitage Museum includes 5 buildings: the Winter Palace created by great artist Rastrelli, the Hermitage Theatre, and buildings of the Small, New and Old Hermitage. During Soviet times, the Reserve House of the Winter Palace, built in the 19th century, also became part of the Museum. More recently, one wing of the General Staff building was given to place the foundations and expositions of the Hermitage.

Of course, you will not be able to explore the entire Winter Palace in one visit. You will see it once you get in the Hermitage. However, those masterpieces which you manage to see will leave unforgettable impressions and a desire to keep exploring the great museum.
