Gogol in St. Petersburg is an excursion which tells you about the amusing acquaintance of the most mysterious writer with the inimitable city of St. Petersburg full of mysterious stories. You will learn the history of their ambiguous relationship and get to know how strong their mutual influence on each other was.

Frosty welcome and fleeting relations

The writer spent in St. Petersburg only 8 years. However, the enigmatic city can be traced in many of his works. Like nobody else, Gogol could understand the identity and the elegant extravagance of the City on Neva, and then convey its image to the prose. It was here that the poetic genius of Gogol was formed and developed.

Initially, the city welcomed the writer with frosty indifference. However, it was here that the works that are now Russian literature classics were written: «Taras Bulba», «Mirgorod», «Revizor» («The Government Inspector»), «Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka». The first several chapters of «Dead Souls» were also written in St. Petersburg.

On the brink of facts and fables

Gogol’s works are a sort of mixture of fictional characters and reality. Many characters of his works have spent their lives in the City of Neva, walked along the same streets to their work and spent time in the very places that the author loved to visit. During the excursion, you will trace several characters of the St. Petersburg stories. Then it will be hard for you to affirm that they existed only on the pages of the books.

Following Gogol’s routes

The route of the excursion corresponds to the history of life journey and career of Nikolai V. Gogol. You will visit the houses where he used to live, places which he loved, monuments commemorating him, and «people’s museum» on Malaya Konyushennaya. There are no personal belongings of the writer, but his works live here: the conferences and meetings are being held here.

You will also see one of Gogol’s first flats on Kazanskaya Street, the Moika Embankment where he worked, the Malaya Morskaya Street where he lived before leaving St. Petersburg. The first performance of the play «Revizor» («The Government Inspector») was conducted in The Alexandrinsky Theatre. At that time, it was referred to as both a masterpiece and phantasmagoria. Today it is an irrevocable classic.
