Upon arrival you will have the opportunity to explore the Grand Imperial Palace and visit the Lower Park with its amazing fountains.

If you are in St. Petersburg and have some free time, be sure to go to Peterhof. Today, it has become possible for foreign visitors, since the tours are provided in English.

According to a recent survey, the Peterhof Palace and Park Ensemble have become one of the seven wonders of Russia after Lake Baikal and the Valley of Geysers in Kamchatka. But among the works of human hands Peterhof is the undisputed leader.

Peterhof or "Russian Versailles"?

Often Peterhof is compared with the famous French Royal residence and is called Russian Versailles. However, Peterhof with its magnificent park ensembles and cascading fountains significantly outperforms the French one. It has a unique water-supply system, the principle of which is based on the use of natural sources and the local relief, is effective without the use of powerful pumps. A similar water-supply system is not even used in Versailles.

Grand Peterhof descends to the coast of the Gulf of Finland with its picturesque terraces, towers triumphantly over the coastline. The Grand Palace offers breathtaking views of the vast expanses of the Gulf of Finland, which once again proves that the residence location was not chosen by chance. The Sea Canal descends from the foot of the Palace, which divides the Lower Park into the western and eastern parts.

Tour to the Peterhof Palace

The knowledge that Peter the Great gained in Europe was used to create a unique construction – the Grand Peter's Court (Peterhoff in translation from Dutch). Although the official opening of the residence took place in 1723, the death of the emperor (1725) left the Palace without attention and proper control for over 5 years. Next decade on behalf of Anna Ioannovna was marked for Peterhof by a new construction under the guidance of architect M. Zemtsov. As a result, Peterhof acquired its present appearance.

Huge damage to the Palace and park ensemble was caused during the Siege. Restoration of some objects of the museum site was completed a little while ago. Today, Peterhof appears before foreign guests in all its glory and acquaints them with the most interesting pages of Russian history.

The magnificent Grand Palace in the mature Baroque style appears before tourists and warmly invites into its ceremonial chambers, affecting visitors by its refine interiors and rich collection of objects of applied art.

Magnificent Peterhof fountains

The large Samson Fountain is located directly at the foot of the Palace. When walking around the park, you will see the Marly and Monplaisir Palaces, Hermitage Pavilion, and obviously fountains. There are over 150 fountains there and they include water cascades, caves, “crackers” and fountains with sculptures. The similar splendor cannot be found anywhere else. Peterhof visitors will be greatly impressed by festivals, which mark the opening and closing ceremonies and are accompanied by fireworks, music, and laser show.
