The Russian Museum is the first state museum with a collection of the Russian fine art masterpieces in Russia. Today it hosts a unique collection of art treasures, which makes it famous throughout the country and far beyond its borders. In addition to this, it is the leading research and development institute, the biggest restoration and cultural awareness center and the scientific methodological coordinator of the 260 museums of fine arts of Russia.

Diverse exposition

During the tour, you will get acquainted with the diverse exhibits in of The Mikhailovsky Palace and The Benois Wing. It is not possible to see all the exhibits at once, because their number exceeds 400 and they are exhibited in different places (also in The Stroganov and The Marble Palaces). However, please note that the cultural value of the museum is not only in the extensive collection of canvases made by prominent Russian artists.

The Russian Museum is justly considered to be one of the largest museums in the world. It also features a unique collections of masterpieces of applied art as well as graphics and sculptures. Its exhibits represent an unparalleled collection of the Russian culture treasures, which has no analogues in the country in terms of its diversity.

The local collection of masterpieces of fine art has seen all historical periods and stages of development of the Russian art throughout the centuries beginning from X century. In the museum, you can enjoy the canvases of K. Malevich, A. Rublev, M. Chagall, K. Bryullov, I. Shishkin, B. Kustodiev, M. Vrubel, I. Repin, A. Kuindzhi, and many other famous Russian artists.

The halls of The Mikhailovsky Palace have undergone restructuring and restoration works specially in order to be able to host the pieces of art given by the private collectors, from The Hermitage, The Academy of Fine Arts and residences of the tsars.

The Benois Wing

The construction of The Benois Wing was initiated by The Academy of Fine Arts. Since then, hosting temporary exhibitions as well as permanent exhibitions of the Soviet period art and epoch of the late XIX - early XX centuries have become a tradition.
